Qualified person-centred counsellor

About me

My Name is Hayley Smith, I am a person centered therapist and Relate-trained relationship counsellor based in Essex, offering support for individuals and couples in Basildon, Rochford, and the surrounding areas.

Before becoming a counsellor, I spent many years working with children, young people, and families through my role at a local authority. Leaving that career to train in counselling was a big decision — one that felt both exciting and daunting. But it was a choice that has brought me immense fulfilment, and I feel privileged to be able to support others on their journeys.

I am deeply curious about people, and I value connection, understanding, and authenticity in the work I do. I know that life can be challenging, and that sometimes past experiences shape how we feel and relate to others. I provide a warm, safe, and confidential space to explore your experiences, understand what may be holding you back, and discover new ways to move forward.

I also believe that everyone has the capacity for growth and fulfilment, and I am here to walk alongside you as you take the steps toward a more contented life and healthier relationships. Whether it’s supporting you individually or with your partner, my approach is collaborative, empathetic, and tailored to your needs.

"In any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth or step back into safety" — Abraham Maslow

Training, qualifications and experience.

I am a qualified Person-Centred Counsellor and a member of the BACP, with specialist training in relational counselling through my Relate Level 5 Post- Qualifying Certificate.

My approach is primarily person-centred and humanistic, but I also draw on systemic and psychodynamic approaches to provide flexible, tailored support. This creates a safe, non-judgmental space to explore your experiences, understand your thoughts and feelings, and work toward meaningful change.
